Penelope Shino is the head of the Japanese programme in the School of Humanities, Massey University, Palmerston North and Albany, Auckland, where she lectures in Japanese language and culture. She is the inaugural president of advocacy and research network Japanese Studies Aotearoa new Zealand (JSANZ), and is currently investigating contextual factors affecting enrolments in Japanese at university level. Her other research interests include medieval Japanese literature and culture, especially the poetry and travel writing of the fifteenth century.
