Anna Fifield

Asia-Pacific Editor: Washington Post

Anna Fifield is a New Zealand journalist and foreign affairs analyst who writes on New Zealand’s place in a rapidly shifting global landscape. She recently launched Between Giants, an independent newsletter offering sharp, original reporting and analysis on geopolitics through a distinctly New Zealand lens — aimed at readers, policymakers, businesses, and diplomats navigating an increasingly complex world.

Fifield spent more than two decades as a foreign correspondent with The Washington Post and Financial Times, reporting from across Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. She served as the Post’s Asia-Pacific Editor, and previously as bureau chief in Beijing and Tokyo, covering Japan and the Koreas. Earlier in her career, she spent 13 years with the Financial Times, reporting from nearly 20 countries, including Iran, Libya, North Korea, and Australia.

She returned to Wellington as editor of The Dominion Post from 2020 to 2022. A Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University, she studied how political change unfolds in closed societies. In 2018, she received Stanford University’s Shorenstein Prize for excellence in reporting on Asia. Her book on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, The Great Successor, has been translated into 24 languages.

Through Between Giants, she continues to report, analyse, and break down complex global developments — bringing together deep expertise, global networks, and an independent voice grounded in New Zealand’s place between competing powers.
