Apply Now: Media Internship Programme 2025–2026

The Asia Media Centre’s Media Internship Programme is now open for 2025–2026 applications.
This programme offers New Zealand journalism graduates and early-career journalists the opportunity to gain first-hand experience at leading news organisations across Asia.
Internships run for six weeks to three months, typically scheduled between November and June, with flexibility to arrange specific dates directly with the host newsroom.
Applications are now open and will close on 13 October 2025.
Elegibility
To be eligible to undertake a media internship, you must be:
be due to complete a journalism qualification in the year of your application, or have been working in journalism in New Zealand for no longer than 18 months.
a New Zealand passport holder or permanent resident based in New Zealand.
Internships are usually awarded to early-career journalists with less than five years experience.
Where can you intern?
The Deccan Herald is a leading English-language daily newspaper based in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Interns are usually expected to write news for the newspaper’s metro desk.
Korea JoongAng Daily (South Korea)
The Korea JoongAng Daily is the English-language arm of JoongAng Group, a huge Korean media conglomerate spanning print, digital and broadcast. It also publishes the JoongAng Ilbo and JoongAng Sunday.
Rappler Manila (The Philippines)
Rappler is a leading online news organisation in the Philippines, founded in 2012 by renowned journalist Maria Ressa.
Sri Lanka Rūpavāhinī Corporation televsion internship
SLRC is the largest television broadcaster in Sri Lanka. The network broadcasts in three languages from three different platforms. It is government-funded with its major studios in the capital Colombo.
The Taipei Times was launched in 1999, with the mission of presenting a voice long absent in the Taiwanese media: an English-language journal of record for national and international readers, presented from a Taiwanese perspective.
TaiwanPlus is a publicly funded international media platform providing English-language news and entertainment from Taiwan.
The Philippine Star (The Philippines)
The Philippine Star is an influential daily English-language broadsheet, based in Philippines capital Manila. Interns are required to carry out news writing and sub-editing.
The Bangkok Post is Thailand’s oldest national newspaper and is read widely throughout Asia. Interns write for the news, sport, business and lifestyle sections of the paper, and are involved in copy and digital news editing.
Thai PBS is the non-commercial public broadcaster in Thailand, running a number of TV channels, including an English-language channel and an online English news website. Thai PBS is based in the capital, Bangkok.
What's covered?
The Asia Media Centre will provide funding to cover economy class return flights and appropriate accommodation, travel insurance and some living expenses. The exact grant value is dependent on the length and location of the internship.
Interns responsibilities
Participants will generally be responsible for arranging their flights, travel insurance, accommodation during the internships, using the grant funds provided.
Interns are expected to contribute about $500 towards living expenses.
Note: The internships are unpaid.

Sharing your experience is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about developments in Asia and demonstrates the work of the Asia Media Centre.
Successful applicants will be required to agree to the standard Terms and Conditions for Asia New Zealand Foundation funding recipients
Reporting requirements
Foundation interns are expected to seek opportunities to share their experience on their return to New Zealand, and to remain engaged with the Asia New Zealand Foundation. Sharing your experience with others is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about developments in Asia.
Interns are expected to write a 600-800-word article (with accompanying photos) on their internship experience that will appear on the Foundation’s website (to be submitted during the internship or within two weeks of returning) and write a final three-page report evaluating the internship experience at the end of the programme.
Selection process
Candidates will be shortlisted by a panel consisting of Asia Media Centre staff and external media experts. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online.
The host media organisation in Asia may wish to conduct an additional interview.
