Video: ‘Xi Jinping an exceptionally strong leader’ Bonnie Glaser

Bonnie Glaser is director of the China Power Project at the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). She spoke to the Asia Media Centre on 5 December during a visit to New Zealand.

Under Xi Jinping’s leadership, should we all be expecting a different kind of China than the one we are used to?

I think that as China has become a stronger country ... it is more willing to assert its interests around the world. I would say this actually started before Xi Jinping came to power. But Xi Jinping himself is an exceptionally strong leader, and I think has a clear vision for where he wants to take China as a country.

He has set out this Chinese dream, the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. And this is a concept that can be used to unify the country in support of the quest that the Chinese people had long before Xi Jinping came to power to really restore China to what they would see its rightful place in the region, and maybe even in the world.

We do see China becoming more assertive, more willing to defend its interests around the world.
